Best Time of Year to Spray Your House for Bugs

Timing your pest control treatments can make a significant difference in effectiveness. In Arizona, where the climate is warm most of the year, pest pressure is a year-round concern — but there are definitely optimal windows for different types of treatments.

Early spring — February through March — is the most important time to treat. This is when overwintering insects become active again and before queen ants, wasps, and other colony insects begin establishing new nests. Getting ahead of colony formation in spring dramatically reduces pest populations for the rest of the year.

Pre-summer treatment in April and May targets scorpions, black widows, and bark scorpions as temperatures rise. In the Phoenix area, scorpion season starts in earnest around April and peaks through August. A perimeter spray combined with granular bait around the foundation during this window gives you the best protection through peak season.

Monsoon season — July through September — drives pests indoors as humidity spikes and flooding disturbs ground nests. This is when homeowners see sudden increases in ants, cockroaches, and crickets inside the home. A mid-summer treatment around late June, just before monsoon activity begins, helps create a chemical barrier before this annual migration happens.

Fall treatment in October and November targets pests seeking warm harborage as nighttime temperatures drop. Mice, rats, and roof rats in particular begin looking for entry points in October. Rodent exclusion work combined with bait stations during this window prevents winter infestations.

For most Arizona homeowners, quarterly treatments from a licensed pest control company provide the most consistent protection. Each visit is timed to address the seasonal pest pressures of that quarter, and technicians can adjust the treatment mix based on what they're observing on your property.

If you're doing DIY treatments, the two most impactful application times are early spring and pre-monsoon. Use a product labeled for general pest control and apply it around the perimeter of your foundation, around door and window frames, and in any areas where you've seen pest activity.
